Why Go Solar in Washington, D.C.?

SREC Market — DC Consistently Ranks Among the Highest-Value in the Country

Washington, DC's Renewable Portfolio Standard includes a dedicated solar carve-out (roughly 15%), and every DC-registered solar system generates Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs) — one SREC per 1,000 kWh (1 MWh) of electricity produced. You can sell these SRECs separately from your electricity savings, to Pepco or other obligated parties working toward RPS compliance, for ongoing annual cash income. Recent reporting places DC SREC prices roughly in the $350–$400 per SREC range, with a Solar Alternative Compliance Payment ceiling that has been cited between $300 and $440 depending on the source and year. Verify the current SACP and spot or contract price before building that figure into your projections. SREC income is generally taxable. For a typical residential system, this can represent several hundred dollars per year in additional income on top of electric bill savings — a major reason DC's solar economics differ from most states.

No Net Metering Cap — Every Pepco DC Customer Qualifies

DC has no aggregate statewide net metering capacity cap. Unlike many states where net metering closes once a capacity threshold is hit, every Pepco DC customer who installs solar qualifies for net metering under Title 15 of the DC Municipal Regulations (Chapters 9 and 40). Excess solar is credited at the full retail rate (true 1:1), and unused monthly bill credits roll forward with no expiration — they are never forfeited. This is a meaningful advantage over states that force an annual true-up or forfeit unused credits entirely.

100% Property Tax Exemption on Added Value — No Expiration

DC's Solar Energy System and Cogeneration System Personal Property Tax Credit provides a 100% exemption from any increase in assessed property tax value that results from installing a solar energy system. You will not owe higher property taxes because your home's value rose due to solar panels. No expiration date is currently on the books for this exemption.

Sales Tax Exemption on Solar Equipment

Solar equipment purchases are exempt from DC sales tax. This exemption applies at the point of purchase and should be reflected in your installer's written quote.
